Diminishing The Darkness By Lifting Up the Marvelous Light Of Jesus Christ

From The Editor -- by Marcia Greenwood                                                                      February 2008
In this world we find that it is getting harder to depend on what many people say.  So many times we are “let down” time and time again because people area not “true” to their word.

But there is very good news – we will never be let down by God – Never, Ever, Ever!  God says that His Word (The Bible) is truth.  Not one Word of His will return unto Him void.  When we speak the Words of the Bible (the promises) to Him – He will always act on our behalf.  God even says that He is not man that He should lie, so He swears by His own name.

When I was first learning that I could depend on God to do what He said He would do – I was very excited.  For almost 35 years as a Christian, I thought His Word was “hit and miss” depending on how God felt at the time and how good I had been.  Bad meant that I might not receive and good meant I had a good chance to receive what I asked for.  No confidence or faith there, right?

Read 1 John 5:14-15. It says this is the confidence  (assurance) that we have in Him (God) that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He hears us: (His will IS His Word). And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

So we know that when we ask God in faith for anything, we know we can believe (the very moment we pray) that we have received what we asked for in prayer.  Now that’s God for you – He doesn’t keep you guessing, that’s true confidence.  Whew!  I feel more confident already, don’t you?

Great Faith

in 2008!

In Luke 7:2-10 we read the story of the healing of the centurion’s servant.

“And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.  And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.  And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, that he was worthy for whom he should do this:  For he loves our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.”

“Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou should enter under my roof:  Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.  For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.”

“When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.  And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.”

In this account we see that, although he never actually spoke directly to Jesus or even met Him face to face, this centurion still believed, had confidence, trusted and had faith, (based only upon what he had heard about Jesus), that if Jesus just gave the order, spoke the words, employed the authority that belonged to Him, then the Centurion’s terminally ill servant would be healed!  To this Jesus responded that this was an example of  “Great Faith” and the centurion’s servant was healed.

The Greek word that is used here, and in most places, for “Faith” is pistis, which means to be persuaded, convicted of truthfulness, to be assured, to believe in and have constancy in profession.  Too often Christians forget about the constant (and consistent) profession part, which is, by definition, the act of openly declaring or publicly claiming belief. (i.e.) Saying.

The Greek word that is used here for “great” is tosoutos and is the compilation of three words meaning “so vast (or large) as this.”  Therefore what we are talking about here is that Jesus had never seen faith so vast and all encompassing as that.  This was surely faith that pleased God!

The centurion’s faith was based upon what he heard.  Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing.  2 Corinthians 5:7 says that we are to walk by faith, not by sight, or may I add, anything else in the natural.  This year we must step up our faith walk beyond our five senses, beyond our current levels of faith and beyond our faith of yesterday.

As I write this message I believe that I am hearing in my spirit from the Holy Spirit that, if we do this, then we can expect the fruits of this same “Great Faith” to be manifest in our lives in 2008!

As Christians, we need to be like this centurion. We must believe that the words of Jesus are true. Then when we believe what He has spoken, without a doubt, it will come to pass. Now that is great faith!
